Report: Canucks' major trade fell through this summer

Probably for the best, all things considered.

Sometimes the best trades are the trades you don't make. This saying could be applied to the Vancouver Canucks, who took a stab at trading for Matt Duchene in August but ultimately didn't make the deal, according to Elliotte Friedman in this week's edition of "31 Thoughts".

Instead, Duchene landed with the Ottawa Senators, and while he has reportedly played well, he has yet to register a single point in 6 games and is a -8.

The price to acquire him was quite high, with the Colorado Avalanche picking up a large haul of picks and prospects from both Ottawa and the Nashville Predators.

The Canucks would've very likely had to give up one of Chris Tanev or Olli Juolevi, a first round pick, and one of Elias Pettersson or Jonathan Dahlen, which would have been a very stiff price to pay.

One of Jim Benning's best moves was not making this trade.
