When the final buzzer rang out at Verizon Center in Washington DC last night, the home team skated off the ice as losers once again. The Washington Capitals, who you would think would be accustomed to playoff disappointment, lost 2-0 in game 7 of their second round playoff series to the Pittsburgh Penguins in perhaps the most disappointing way possible. At home, with their season on the line, the Capitals couldn't even muster a single goal.

For a team that’s often looked deflated and bewildered after previous playoff upsets, this season’s group was more angry and frustrated with themselves and how things played out in game 7. That was the sentiment form CSN’s Jil Sorenson who reported that the Capitals players were “holding back…they were angry after feeling they didn’t leave it all out on the ice”.

“We got to find way to put the puck in the net. Big moments, your big players got to play big and I don’t think we did that tonight,” said forward TJ Oshie. Braden Holtby echoed his sentiments saying, “I don’t think tonight we gave ourselves a chance and it’s not what worked for.”

One thing’s for sure, it’ll be a long offseason for the Capitals and their fans this summer. Let the analysis begin!
