Report: Caps’ Oshie talks free-agency and possible return

Could the Caps fit him in? It would take some serious cap-crunching.

At the conclusion of the 2016-17 season it was mostly a foregone conclusion that the Washington Capitals would lose several key players to free-agency. TJ Oshie, Kevin Shattenkirk, Karl Alzner, Justin Williams, they’d all become sacrificial lambs of the NHL’s salary cap and be forced to seek employment elsewhere in the league. Not so fast… at least one player, Oshie, feels there’s still a fit for himself in DC.

When asked if he’d like to return to the Capitals for net season, Oshie replied, “Yeah, this group of guys, the organization, the coaches, it’s been a great fit for me and it’s been a great fit for my family. So, I’d like to come back. here.”

Again, the trouble comes when discussing Oshie’s next contract and how to fit it under the salary cap. However, general manager Brian MacLellan did confirm that he has had general talks with Oshie’s agent and that if the salary cap rises to $77 million, there’s a “decent chance” Oshie is re-signed. Such a development would all but guarantee that Shattenkirk, Alzner and Williams are all left to walk.

What do you think Caps fans? Oshie seems like an awful good fit alongside Ovechkin? What’s a reasonable cap hit and term for him moving forward?
