Not sure he deserves this kind of scrutiny. What do you think?

Report: Controversy surrounding Oilers' goalie, gets completely trashed by the media
Keystone Press

Yesterday was Bell Let's Talk day. An important reminder to everyone that many of us suffer from mental health issues, and that it's okay to talk about it.

Edmonton Oilers reporter for TSNRyan Rishaug, took a shot at recently acquired goaltender Al Montoya for being the only player on the team who doesn't make himself available for the media on game days.

His wording triggered a lot of hate, as it seemed to imply that he was taking a shot at his mental health.

Here were some of the reactions.

There were about 1,000 replies to this tweet, many of this nature.

He goes on to take a shot at Carey Price.

This just sounds like someone who is sour that he can't get a juicy soundbite for a good story.

He later apologized for the tweet, claiming that it wasn't a jab at Montoya's mental state, but the point remains the same. There's an issue here, and it appears Rishaug hasn't had proper sensitivity training, or just lacks some common sense. In a time where what we post on social media is highly scrutinized and more accessible than ever, a reporter's responsibility is to the public. Making any kind of assertion that could make people feel attacked, especially the day after we were all reminded about the importance of how words can hurt, intention or not, is a plain act of disrespect and ignorance.

Let this be a lesson to us all, times are changing, and what we write has a serious bearing on others, and it's important to be mindful of the impact of certain words and declarations before hitting the publish button.
