Report: Difficult roster decisions to be made by Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers are heading to San Jose on Monday afternoon and GM Ron Hextall has to make tough roster decisions before then. 

As Sam Carchidi of CSNPhilly.com reports, the Flyers have 25 healthy players in camp and need to trim their roster to 23. The season opener will take place against the San Jose Sharks in California and the final roster needs to be in place. 

It is projected that the team will keep seven defensemen and 14 forwards, and that the goalies will be Michal Neuvirth and Brian Elliott, but fans are wondering which rookies will be kept in the lineup. The rookies still in camp are center Nolan Patrick; left wingers Oskar Lindblom and Taylor Leier; and defensemen Travis Sanheim, Sam Morin, and Robert Hagg.

The first rounder Patrick should be the No. 2 center as the season starts, with Jordan Weal and Wayne Simmonds as his wingers. 

What about the others? 

"If all three rookie defensemen make the team, the Flyers’ D will have five players with less than two years of experience," Carchidi writes. 

Things should be clearer on Sunday night after the last exhibition game for Hextall.
