Soon-to-be President of the United States Donald Trump will likely have a busy schedule that won't leave much time for hockey when he takes office later this week, but it turns out it was something he did have some considerable interest in prior to his political career.

Perhaps unsurprisingly the billionaire who always associated with the city of New York once tried to purchase the New York Islanders in the 1990s, but for whatever reason that deal never materialized. A much bigger surprise however was the story of how he tried to purchase on of the National Hockey League's southern expansions.

From the Miami Herald:

Although he made his mark as a New York real estate tycoon, Trump (as many New Yorkers do) eventually looked south.

He spent time during the winter months in Palm Beach.

He bought a little golf course in Doral and spent a few bucks fixing it up.

And, around 2000, Trump inquired about buying South Florida’s professional hockey team.

It sounds like by the time Wayne Huizenga and Boca Resorts, the group selling the Panthers at the time, informed suitors that they wanted to keep ownership local, Trump's camp may have already lost interest.
