Well… I guess that explains the criticism of his soft play during the playoffs?

Whether or not you’re a Carolina Hurricanes fan, chances are you had an opinion on defenceman Dougie Hamilton and his play during the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The lanky, smooth skating blueliner just three goals and seven points in 15 playoff games this spring, and failed to hit the 40 point plateau during the regular season for the first time in five years. So… what gives? It’s easy to forget that Hamilton is just 25 years old, so he’s not on the decline just yet… so again… what gives?

Well according to a report from NHL.com’s Michael Smith, Hamilton played almost the entire season with a broken finger.

Check it out:

Ouch… that can’t make defending easy. Now granted, we’re just talking about a pinkie finger here. But anyone who has ever had a hand injury will tell you just how much it impacts your life.

Judging from the photo included in Smith’s report, the injured finger is on Hamilton’s right hand, which would be the bottom hand on his stick. This would severely limit Hamilton’s power when it comes to passing, shooting and stick handling. Double ouch.
