With the Montreal Canadiens dead last in the Eastern Conference standings and a 9 million dollars budget yet to be spent, many fans are wondering what is GM Marc Bergevin waiting for to shake his team up before it is too late.

According to reporter Elliotte Friedman, there would be a specific reason for that and his name is John Tavares.

Friedman believes that the Habs are in waiting mode to see what will happen in the Tavares saga in New York and jump in the derby if he ever becomes available on the market. On the air of 630 CHED in Edmonton this is what he had to say:

“I just think that Montreal is sitting there waiting to see what happens,” noted Friedman. “I think Montreal is just sitting there with a lot of cap room. I think what they’re doing is waiting to see what occurs. Does he re-sign. Does he test the market.
“Look, I’ve said a billion times I think his first choice is to re-sign, but I think Montreal is sitting there hedging their bets and saying, ‘Just in case.’ And I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I think that if John Tavares does become available, he’s better than anyone who’s going to be available, so I think that’s kind of Montreal’s plan and the owner let it slip at the beginning of the year.”

With one year remaining to his contract, Tavares has yet to agree on an extansion in New York, which brings lots of questions and rumors on his real desire to stay with the team.

What shout the Canadiens offer the Islanders in order to acquire him?
