Report: Erik Gudbranson likely to be traded
Keystone Press

Vancouver Canucks general manager Jim Benning has given an interesting update regarding Erik Gudbranson situation, as reported on Sportsnet 650 by Sportsnet insider John Shannon. The 25-year old defenseman, acquired by the Canucks in 2016 for Jared McCann and two draft picks in the 2016 draft, kind of struggled since he joined the Canucks. He only played 30 games last season, registering six points with a +/- differential of -14. In 12 games played so far this season, he didn't register a point. Many believe that a change of scenery would be the best thing for Gudbranson, but Benning will not make a move until February.

Based on the fact that they gave a good young prospect, Jared McCann, in that trade, the Canucks would like to have something good if they decide to trade Gudbranson. However, if they decide to keep him until the end of the season, they put themselves at risk of losing him for nothing in the summer, because his contract expires at the end of this year. Shannon reported that it would be quite a surprise if Gudranson decides to re-sign in Vancouver.

Benning has stated that he doesn't want to go through what happened with Dan Hamuis in 2016 again. The veteran defenseman was linked to many trade rumors on the final year of his contract, but the Canucks didn't trade him and they lost him for nothing when he signed with the Dallas Stars in the summer.

One thing that make the Gudbranson situation even more touchy is the fact that the player they traded him for is doing quite well with the Florida Panthers this season. Jared McCann, drafted 24th overall by the Canucks in 2014, has already five points in eight games played. He played his rookie season with the Canucks in 2015-2016, registering 18 points in 69 games. He spent a major part of last season in the AHL.

What do you think, Canucks fans? Should Benning trade Gudbranson and try to get as much as he can in return?
