Report: Flames about to miss out on Versteeg?
Keystone Press

Kris Versteeg was one of the best value players of anyone in the entire NHL last season. His one-year, $950,000 contract signed after the 2016-17 season had already started barely made a ripple in the news when it was announced. After a 15 goal, 37 point campaign however, all eyes will be on Versteeg when he signs his next contract.

Surprisingly, NHL insider Darren Dreger reports that Versteeg may not return to Calgary and has actually received interest from other teams across the league.

It wouldn’t be a total surprise to see Versteeg leave Cow Town, but with the impact that he provided the team in 2016-17, especially on the power play, the loss would be felt. Like everything in life, it all comes down to dollars and cents. One calendar year ago Versteeg was planning on taking his game to Europe, so if Flames GM Brad Treliving can table an offer to Versteeg’s liking prior to July 1st, look for Versteeg to sign before the ink is even dry. If not, he’ll likely receive a fair deal on the open market.
