Report: Flames kick tires on former Oilers defenseman
Zuma Press

In case you missed it earlier this week, the Calgary Flames bought out the contract of veteran defenseman Michael Stone, thereby freeing up nearly $2.5 million in cap space.

Check it out:

While Stone clearly wasn’t worth the $3.5 million annual contract he had, he’s still a serviceable NHL defenseman and will likely catch on with another club in free agency. As for the Flames, they’ll have to fill Stone’s depth role some other way. But how?

Edmonton Oilers insider Jim Matheson reports that the Flames are interested in former Oilers blueliner Alex Petrovic.

Check it out:

The right-shooting, 27 year old blue liner played just nine games with the Oilers after coming over from the Florida Panthers and has never really established himself as anything more than a third pairing, depth defenseman.

So, while this may be the exact role the Flames are looking to fill, wouldn’t they be wiser to use the spot on a young player like Jusso Valimaki or Oliver Kylington? With T.J. Brodie, Travis Hamonic and Rasmus Andersson all holding down spots on the right side, as well… why shoe horn a guy like Petrovic into the lineup?
