Report: Flames qualify nine pending RFA’s
Keystone Press

The Calgary Flames have announced that they’ve tendered qualifying offers to nine players, including Sam Bennett, Michael Ferland, Curtis Lazar, Brett Kulak, Jon Gillies and Linden Vey. A qualifying offer simply designates these players as restricted free-agents come July 1st, rather than unrestricted free-agents.

Interestingly, the Flames also chose to not tender a qualifying offer to forward Alex Chiasson. As a result, the 26 year-old acquired exactly one year ago today will hit the open market this summer. In 81 games with the Flames in 2016-17, Chiasson potted 12 goals and 24 points. While that may not be anything to sneeze at, the Flames simply have enough depth throughout their lineup to walk away from Chiasson and offer up his spot to a younger player like Hunter Shinkaruk or Curtis Lazar.
