Report: Flyer headed back to Philadelphia with a mysterious injury.

This is a rough one.

The Philadelphia Flyers have lost a player to a mystery injury and it is going to be some incredibly frustrating news for their fan base.

On Saturday afternoon Philadelphia Flyers insider Dave Isaac of USA Today revealed that goaltender Michal Neuvirth has once again been injured and this does not sound like it is going to be a minor injury. According to Isaac Neuvirth is already on his way back to Philadelphia for the express purpose of being evaluated by the organizations medical staff, an indication that he may in fact be dealing with a significant injury.

The news is particularly frustrating due to the fact that Neuvirth was only just coming off a conditioning stint in the American Hockey League and it seems very fair to suggest that the Flyers were likely hoping that he could give Brian Elliott a bit of a fight for the starters job in the flyers' net. Not only did Neuvirth have an extremely poor showing however, in his one game played he recorded a 6.00 goals against average and a laughably bad .727 save percentage, but it now appears that he was injured in the process as well. At this time I will not speculate on the nature of his injury as it appears to be a complete mystery to even those who closely follow the Flyers.

It's not just this season causing the frustration either, Neuvirth has become incredibly injury prone in recent seasons and his inability to stay healthy has routinely become a headache for the Flyers organization. I don't think it's a coincidence that some fans are calling for Neuvirth to retire following this announcement although I have no doubt that he will ignore those taunts entirely.

It's unclear if this is related to the Neuvirth injury or not but Isaac is also reporting that 26 year old goaltender Calvin Pickard will be getting the start for the Flyers on Saturday night when they take on the San Jose Sharks. The former Colorado Avalanche goaltender has already appeared in 3 games for the Flyers this year and has recorded some pretty ugly stats of his own with a 4.73 goals against average and a .833 save percentage.
