The Philadelphia Flyers have avoided arbitration at the very last minute, but have paid a big price to do so.

While Flyer's forward Brayden Schenn was reportedly seeking a one year deal worth upwards of $5.5 million as a restricted free agent,, the Flyers and Schenn settled on a four year contract that will may him a hefty $20.5 million over that term. That works out to an average annual value and salary cap hit of $5.125 million.

It was a tough spot for the Flyers' who have Schenn coming off a career year, while they likely aren't happy with the kind of money they had to give up to keep him long term, a one year deal like the kind Schenn was looking for in arbitration would have been a terrible outcome.

The Flyers are hoping that Schenn will live up to the potential he showed in his contract year.
