The Philadelphia Flyers will be without one of their core players on Saturday and it remains to be seen how they intend to deal with that scenario.

According to an official report from the Flyers organization, the team has lost Sean Couturier, one of it's most important centerman and one of their most valuable players overall, for the time being to injury. According to the official report from the Flyers Couturier is currently dealing with a lower body injury, although the team has not opted to give a time table regarding his return.

The news now leaves the Flyers with very little depth up the middle of the ice, especially following the move of veteran center Claude Giroux over to the wing, and it also may explain some of the call ups that were made in recent days. It's still not clear how the Flyers will look to fill the void left by Couturier's injury by according to a report from Flyers insider Dave Issac it sounds like either Jordan Weal or Phil Varone will be taking his spot on the roster, although this has not been confirmed by the team at this time.

It's a gigantic loss for the Flyers who can ill afford to lose any of their core players when you consider just how poor the situation has been for them in goal this season. This becomes especially true when you consider the fact that Couturier is not only the organizations top center, but that he is also arguably their best 2 way forward, one of the best 2 way forwards in the entire NHL in fact. The strong defense that is played by Couturier will be very difficult to replace in a forward and if the Flyers are relying on their goaltenders to hold down the fort while Couturier is absent they may be in for a very rude awakening.

The timing of this move is quite poor given that couturier was having a strong start to the season thus far. Through his first 26 games of the 2018 - 2019 NHL regular season Couturier has registered 10 goals and 10 assists for a total of 20 points and has just 4 penalty minutes to his name. Here's to hoping he makes a quick recovery.
