Despite his initial plea of not guilty, on Wednesday former Bruins great Ray Bourque admitted in court that he was under the influence when he struck a mini-van while he was driving despite having a blood alcohol level three times over the legal limit.

According to a report from the Boston Globe Bourque also admitted that the prosecutor had sufficient evidence to convince him, part of a deal he struck to avoid a conviction. In order to avoid that conviction Bourque will need to complete 1 year of probation, and will have his license suspended for 225 days.

Bourque also issued a statement on Wednesday.

“I know that I have let my family, friends, fans, the community and myself down. I apologize to all of you. I am sorry,” Bourque said as per the Boston Globe.

“I have begun to take the steps necessary to live my life in a better way. As always, I will learn from my mistakes and I will continue to focus on the positive impact I can have in the community and for those around me.”
