Former Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes and Montreal Canadiens sniper Alexander Semin has hung up his skates and retired from the sport at just 33 years of age. The elite level talent is the poster boy for the “enigmatic Russian” stereotype and is a prime example of a player who had all the tools in the game, with no toolbox to put them in. The skills were always on display with Semin, but he lacked the mental and physical determination to play the game with any consistency.

Following his most recent season with Magnitogorsk Metallurg in the KHL, the team elected not to renew his contract. After receiving no other offers to continue his career, Semin has officially applied to the Siberian Federal University (SFU) and plans to study metallurgy full-time.  Specifically, he plans to pursue the Master’s Program in “Metallurgy of Non-Ferrous Metals” offered by the University’s Institute of Non-Ferrous Metals and Materials Science.
