Report: Former NHLer confirms a shocking rumor about goalie equipment

Calgary Flames goaltender Mike Smith has just recently unveiled his brand new all-black equipment, which looks just like the one he had with the Arizona Coyotes. 

Many people have since said it is a surprise to know the Flames allowed the 35-year-old netminder to have a dark gear, considering Brian Elliott was reportedly strongly encouraged to switch to a more traditional set last season.

This forces one to ask whether NHL goaltenders can actually choose the color of the equipment they wear. Well, it looks like they can't. Former goalie Ben Scrivens confirmed this shocking rumor today on Twitter, implying another NHL team, the Los Angeles Kings in this case, obliged him to have a more traditional equipment:

It is believed that it is easier to score against a goalie with a contrasting equipment, but Winnipeg Jets' Michael Hutchinson has firmly denied this statement. He wrote on Twitter last year that "At the end of the day, your skill stops the puck. Dark gear and white gear is made the exact same way and are the exact same size. Sometimes it's fun to switch it up."
