Report: Former second round pick cut from his contract, will be free agent.

A former second round draft selection has demanded to be released from his contract, and it appears he will be granted his wish.

On Monday the Vancouver Canucks placed 26-year-old forward Anton Rodin on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract, but according to the team the move was made at the player's request.

"Anton asked to be released from his contract," said Canucks general manager Jim Benning as per NHL.com. "We value the skill and depth he adds to our team but ultimately it was important to respect Anton's request to move on."

The Swedish winger was never able to establish himself on the Canucks roster largely due to a serious of injuries stemming from a cut he received to his knee, a cut that sliced his tendon, and the complications he had with that knee following his surgery.

It's unclear what the next step for Rodin is now, but he will be an unrestricted free agent when his contract is officially terminated which means he could be signed by any team in the National Hockey League that is looking to add depth on the wing.

Rodin has 1 goal and 1 assists in 7 games with the American Hockey League's Utica Comets this season.
