Report: Hawks’ Kane makes surprising comments about the captaincy in Chicago

It’s hard to believe but Chicago Blackhawks superstars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have both been in the NHL now for ten years. The pair have been instrumental in the turn-around of a once historic franchise that had languished for decades without a true superstar. The arrival of both Kane and Toews in 2007 completely turned the fate of the franchise around and has resulted in three Stanley Cup championships in the past 10 years.

It’s hard to remember now, given all of their accomplishments, but 10 years ago when the pair entered the league together they were just 19 and 20 year-old fresh faces. They’ve literally grown up from boys to men in Blackhawks uniforms and they wouldn’t change a thing.

"We were fortunate to be drafted by Chicago, for sure," says Kane. "And fortunate to come up at the same time. Especially at the start, when we were 19 or 20, still feeling things out, reading off each other, bouncing things off one another.”

Kane does make one surprising admission however about himself and his teammate. He admits that he’s not captain material. “We have different roles,” said Kane comparing himself to Toews. “He deserves to be captain, for sure. He controls the room. I think I've become a better leader, but sometimes it's nice just to prepare yourself. Would I ever want to wear the 'C'? Nope."

Interesting. While truthfully we’ve never considered Kane as captain of the Hawks because, with Toews in the equation, the matter is a foregone conclusion. Ask anyone who the leader of the Hawks is and the answer is obvious: Jonathan Toews.

Regardless, it’s interesting to hear Kane’s line of thinking and it’s refreshing to hear an athlete speak so honestly about himself.
