A new world record.

Well it turns out the reason things looked insane in Hershey, Pennsylvania on Sunday night is because that's exactly what they were.

The Hershey Bears were taking on the Binghamton Devils at the Giant Center in what otherwise would have been your everyday regular season game but this one caught the attention of a great many people in the hockey world because of a special event that took place during the game's very 1st period. The fans in attendance that evening were also there to participate in a tradition that has become very popular around the hockey world, the Teddy Bear Toss.

The fans in attendance were merely waiting for the Bears to get on the board to unleash their cargo and although it was the Devils who would find the back of the net first, the Bears responded midway through the first. The goal sent an absolute sea of stuffed animals cascading down from every corner of the building in what was truly an extraordinary sight to behold. I commented when first reporting on the video of event that it looked to me like the most impressive display of it's nature that I had personally witnessed and the Bears have now confirmed their new world record.

According to an official report from the Bears they have collected a whopping 34,798 stuffed animals after tonight's Teddy Bear Toss, a clean up that reportedly delayed the game for over a half hour. That number is of course completely crazy but it's made even more impressive when you take into consideration that there were just over 10,000 people reportedly in attendance at the game this evening.

The previous record has been set by the Calgary Hitmen but they had nearly double the attendance at the time. From the NHL's official website:

Stallard ensured a record-setting 28,815 stuffed toys rained down from a sellout crowd of 19,289 at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday when his shot from the slot beat Swift Current Broncos goaltender Travis Child at 2:41 of the second period.

Now obviously this is not to diminish the record previously established the Hitmen in any way, it was an amazing feat, but merely to point out how unbelievably generous all the hockey fans in Hersey were this evening.
