The New York Islanders have in fact lost their goaltender Jaroslav Halak for an extended period of time.

Halak was injured on Tuesday night in the final five minutes of the the Islanders match up against the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Barclays Center. Halak was attempting to make a save with 4:44 left to go, and it was that motion that appeared to have caused the injury to the veteran goaltender.

Halak would immediately head to the locker room, and thankfully for the Islanders Thomas Greiss was able to step in and preserve the one goal lead and secure the win, however it now sounds like he will need to do a lot more of that.

The Islanders have announced that Halak will be out for "at least" six weeks as a result of what they are calling a lower-body injury, the team did not give any specific details on the injury.

“He’s out at least six weeks,” Jack Capuano said. “We’ll go from there.”

"He’s an experienced guy who’s been down this stretch before and played some big games for us as we’ve made our playoff run,” Capuano said. “It’s a big loss for our team, but guys are going to get an opportunity to step in and hopefully can do the job.”

Greiss will now be tested with a very serious workload.
