Bad news for the Bruins captain.

The Boston Bruins eventually walked away from their Friday night match up against the Dallas Stars with just a single point in their pockets but when you consider their current circumstances they likely were fairly happy with that outcome.

The Bruins blue line has been absolutely ravaged by injuries this season and they were without a staggering 6 defensemen on Friday night, all of them out with one form of an injury or another. The 6 players who were sidelined due to injury were Charlie McAvoy (head), Brandon Carlo (upper body), Kevan Miller (right hand), John Moore (lower body), Urho Vaakanainen (head) and of course Boston Bruins' captain Zdeno Chara (left knee).

The towering Bruins captain was injured on Wednesday when the Bruins faced off against the talented young offense of the Colorado Avalanche and although he was spotted clearly limping off the ice it remained unclear just how serious his injury was going to be. Now thankfully we have an update for fans who have been eagerly awaiting any kind of news regarding Chara, but unfortunately the news is not good.

According to a breaking report from Boston Bruins insider Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic, an insider source has informed him that the Bruins captain is expect to miss at least the next four to six weeks as a result of the injury. This of course means that Chara is going to miss at least a dozen games on the schedule which could push his potential return to the Bruins line up all the way back into 2019 at this point.

The good news for the Bruins is that they had a couple of rookies in the line up on Friday night, and fortunately it seems like they performed rather well in the absence of some of Boston's more experienced veterans.

“I don’t think it was difficult at all,” said Rask as per Shinzawa. “I thought guys stepped up and played well. I didn’t notice any difference out there.”

Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask was not the only man impressed by the play of the Bruins rookies either, head coach Bruce Cassidy appeared to be satisfied in spite of the fact that his team walked away with an overtime loss.

“The defending part was good,” said Bruce Cassidy of his makeshift first pairing. “They didn’t allow them odd-man rushes by being caught. I think there was one — I don’t know if it was those two, I’d have to go back and look at it — but for the most part, they were respectful of who they were playing against and how they had to play. Did a nice job.”

Nonetheless, losing Chara for over a month is going to be a tough break for the Bruins.
