Report: Insider reveals Bruins’ deadline offer for Eric Staal

The Boston Bruins and Minnesota Wild made headlines when they hooked up on one of the biggest trades of the 2019 NHL Trade Deadline but according to a report from Wild insider Michael Russo, the two teams were working on something much, much bigger.

As it was, the Bruins acquired forward Charlie Coyle from the Wild in exchange for rookie Ryan Donato and a 5th round pick. Coyle has been an excellent pickup for the B’s, scoring six goals and 12 points in 17 playoff games so far, but you can’t help but think of what the Bruins’ roster might look like had they managed to land their initial target: Eric Staal.

Steal, of course, was floated out there as trade bait but ultimately Wild GM Paul Fenton wasn’t receiving the kind of offers he’d like so he re-upped Staal to a very team friendly two year, $6.5 million contract. Now, Russo has reportedly leaked the Bruins’ offer and… well let’s just say that Wild fans are happy that Fenton hung on to Staal.

The deal on the table was reportedly Staal to the Bruins in exchange for forward Sean Kuraly and the Bruins’ 1st round pick in the upcoming 2019 NHL Entry Draft. So… Staal for Kuraly and a 1st. What do you think, Wild fans? Was Fenton wise to pass this up?

There’s no doubt that Staal would be an excellent addition to the Bruin’s roster, but given the high asking price and ultimately the price that they ended up paying for Coyle, it’s probably in the Bruins’ best interest that Minny passed. You have to also imagine that were the Bruins able to land Staal then they probably don’t have the need to acquire Marcus Johansson from the New Jersey Devils for a 2nd and 4th round pick. Hmmmm… what do you think Bruins fans?
