The New York Islanders have announced that they’ve signed 24 year-old goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis to a one year, two-way contract worth $650,000. The signing was announced by Newsday reporter and Islanders insider Arthur Staple:

Canadian hockey fans may remember Gudlevskis from the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in which he nearly backstopped Latvia to a victory over the heavily favored Canada. The hype surrounding Gudlevskis at the time was that he was on the path to NHL stardom for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Three inconsistent years and a trade to the Islanders later and his NHL future is very much in doubt.

Having said that, the youngster was an AHL All-Star just one season ago so there’s still hope that he’ll fulfill on the potential he once showed.
