Joel Quenneville might be tempted to use Brent Seabrook at another position.

Being a leader on your team means making sacrifices and doing whatever it takes to help your team, no matter the circumstances. No one knows this better than Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. A staple on the blue line for each of the Hawks’ past three Stanley Cup championships, Seabrook has always answered the call when his team needs him.

On Monday night’s 5-4 OT loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning, however, Seabrook found himself in an extremely unlikely place: the faceoff circle. Playing 3-on-3 in the extra frame, his team’s centerman Marcus Kruger was tossed from the faceoff leaving either Seabrook or his defense partner Duncan Keith to take the draw.

I played center when I was 13 or 14, so that’s the preparation I have for taking a faceoff,” said Seabrook to reporters as he explained why he took the draw over his partner. The native of Tsawwassen, BC lost the draw handily to Jonathan Drouin and jokingly indicated that he didn’t exactly receive a fair shot from the linesman. “I was trying to get ready, but the ref dropped the puck so fast with the new quick faceoffs.”

Even the team’s head coach Joel Quenneville found the situation amusing, saying, “a lot of things happen that you’ve never seen before, and that was one of them.” When asked if the Hawks defense corps would be working on faceoff drills during practice, Quenneville could only laugh and say, “that’s one that we don’t have to worry about too much.
