Report: John Tavares makes unexpected comment about his future in the NHL!

It is hard to know what kind of deal John Tavares will sign at the end of next season. Is he going to get something more Ryan Johansen-like, or contract close to Connor McDavid's? It is hard to know precisely, since there is absolutely no information coming from any NHL insider about the negotiations between the New York Islanders and the 26-year-old captain.

However, Tavares is adamant: he wants to stay with his current organization for a long time. Here is what he said, in an interview with TSN:

"I think I'll just keep that all internal. We've had great open communication, it's obviously a great place to play, I've enjoyed my time being an Islander and I want that experience to continue. For me, I just want to get ready for the upcoming season and work on being the best player I can be for the Islanders."

That was a pretty unexpected declaration, considering he is reportedly waiting to see how GM Garth Snow will manage his team over the next few months before taking a decision on whether he will stay, or not.

Tavares recorded 28 goals and 38 assists for 66 points in 77 games with the Isles last season. 2017-18 will be the last season of his six-year, $33 million contract. The 2009 first-overall pick played 587 NHL games, in which he recorded 235 goals and 302 assists for 537 points. He added 22 points in 24 playoff games.
