The spotlight has been burning brightly on Toronto Maple Leafs power forward James van Riemsdyk this season. Not only is the 28-year-old the team’s leading scorer so far this season, but he’s been the focal point of seemingly endless trade rumours. The winger affectionately known as JVR is in the final year of a six-year, $25.5 million contract that pays him an annual salary of $4.25 million.

With 15 goals and 22 points in 31 games, it’s clear that JVR is going to cash in large this summer. Whether he gets his money from the Leafs or with a new team via the free-agent market, remains to be seen. To his credit, JVR isn’t letting all the talk get to him.

“I’ve tried not to think about,” said JVR to TSN reporter Frank Seravalli. “You’re human and it’s your future, so there’s some degree of that. Your mind goes there sometimes – wanting to know for sure.”

At just 28-years-old it’s hard to believe that JVR has been in the NHL for nine years now. And with each passing season he’s beginning to realize the importance of playing for a winner. “You want to be on a team that’s winning,” he said when asked about the motivations driving his next contract.

The Leafs certainly seem to be on the right path, one that could potentially deliver a Stanley Cup championship. With the plan in place and JVR’s motivations aligned with the team’s, is there a chance he takes a discount to stay with his current team? Time will tell.
