Report: Kessel trade rumours heating up
Keystone Press

When Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist Ron Cook released a report yesterday that indicated that the Pittsburgh Penguins may be working behind the scenes to trade sniper Phil Kessel, most of the hockey world brushed it off as a nonsense rumor. Now, however, one of hockey’s most trusted insiders, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, is corroborating Cook’s story.

In his latest 30 Thoughts article for Sportsnet, Friedman writes:

I do think there is something to the column by Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the Penguins will look to trade Phil Kessel.

Interesting. In case you missed it Cook describes the relationship that Kessel had with former Penguins assistant coach and now Arizona Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet. Cook asserts that with Tocchet now out of the picture in Pittsburgh, there’s no buffer in place between Kessel and head coach Mike Sullivan. It’s no secret that Kessel and Sullivan haven’t always seen eye to eye and Cook believes that a Kessel trade will happen “sooner rather than later.”

Keep your eyes peeled on this rumor, things could get VERY interesting this summer in Pittsburgh.
