Report: Leafs have much more cap space for moves than originally believed.

When it was revealed earlier today that the Toronto Maple Leafs were reportedly in on a potential trade for one of the Colorado Avalanche's available forwards in Matt Duchene and Gabriel Landeskog many had their doubts.

Those doubts primarily came from the belief that the Leafs wouldn't have the cap space required to take on such a large contract mid-season, but according to a new report TSN's James Mirtle, the Leafs took care of that issue earlier this season, although it went unreported at the time.

From Mirtle in the Athletic:

I’ve confirmed with a strong source that the Maple Leafs have put Joffrey Lupul, Stephane Robidas and Nathan Horton on long-term injured reserve.

And that they actually did so very early on this season.

In theory, that means the Leafs have another $13.55-million in salary cap space to use, with the trade deadline less than two weeks away.

Now this does not mean the Leafs will in fact pull the trigger on this deal, but they do in fact have the room to make it happen.

If you missed our report on the rumor earlier today you can read about it here.
