Report: Leafs rocked by more injuries

In case you missed it, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced yesterday that 21 year old defenseman Travis Dermott will be out day to day with a shoulder issue.

The sophomore blue liner had an assist and a penalty in Wednesday night’s victory over the Sens, but according to a report from Sportsnet’s Luke Fox, he suffered an injury that would force him out of the lineup for an undermined amount of time.

Now, it looks like another top prospect Frederik Gauthier is out of the lineup.

Gauthier injured in Ottawa tonight, no details regarding severity, more information expected tomorrow . Brooks line with Clune and Bracco drew high praise from Coach and Matthews for their work prior to game’s opening goal.

Ouch.. that’s not good. For those not aware, Dermott and Gauthier are both expected to push for full time spots this season after splitting the season between the NHL and AHL last season. No word yet on the severity of the injuries, but we expect some word later today.

The 21 year old Dermott suited up for 37 games last season with the Leafs, scoring one goal and 13 points. It’s expected that the youngster will take a step forward this season and could even see some power play time, provided he manages to stay out of head coach Mike Babcock’s dog house. Babcock keeps Dermott on a pretty short leash, but it’s evident that the blue liner is just oozing with skill and offensive ability. The former 2nd round pick (34th overall) of the Leafs in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft has seven goals and 42 points in 87 career AHL games.

As for Gauthier, the 23 year old center has played just 37 games over three seasons for the Leafs and has sort of stalled in terms of his development. The 6 foot, 5 inch, 232 pound giant was selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and put up a career high seven goals and 18 points in 57 games with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies last season.
