Report: Lundqvist will remain the odd man out after the trade deadline

It has to be tough for the veteran

Once a perennial Vezina favourite, Henrik Lundqvist has found himself relegated to third-in-line this season with the New York Rangers. Unfortunately for "King Henrik", it looks like it will remain that way after the trade deadline.

According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, no teams are inquiring about Lundqvist and no deals are being set up for Alexandar Georgiev or Igor Shesterkin. Shesterkin has already been named the new number one goalie in town and it appears the Rangers are content with having Georgiev stay in the backup position. That means Lundqvist will likely ride out the final year of his contract in 2020-21 either in the pressbox or sitting on the bench.

Obviously that isn't what Lundqvist would prefer. His contract, paying him $8.5 million per season, makes him extremely difficult to move. But, it's hard not to feel bad for the guy who was once the toast of New York. Fans chanted his name night after night. Now, he seems little more than and afterthought, at least to the team's management.

Georgiev has been the subject of trade rumours since what seems like very early in the season, but nothing has materialized. With just five days remaining until the trade deadline, something would need to happen fast. Until then, "Hank" will remain in the sidelines.
