Report: Malkin opens up about Russian doping and Olympic ban

In his latest column for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Pittsburgh Penguins beat reporter Jason Mackey catches up with superstar Evgeni Malkin and gets him to open up about the International Olympic Committee’s decision to ban the entire Russian Federation from the upcoming Winter Olympics.

“It’s a tough time right now about Olympics, what’s going on [with] doping,” Malkin said. “It’s a tough situation, I want to support not just the president, I want to support all athletics and support my country.”

Malkin is no stranger to making political statements, but at the same time, he’s an intensely private individual. Still, he did not shy away from sharing his feelings on the IOC’s decision. He also made it clear that he plans on playing for his country in the 2022 games in Beijing.

“We’re not going this year,” Malkin said. “Probably next [time] I’ll have my last chance to go. We see what’s going on. It’s hard to say right now. I feel I have one more chance to play. I’ll do everything. I’ll try to be in great shape.”
