A great coup by the Leafs comes with a price.
At least time it's not as ridiculous as a team paying compensation for a head coach that had already been fired.
The Toronto Maple Leafs managed a huge coup on Thursday when they hired Lou Lamoriello to be the team's next general manager, but that coup will come with a price.
Tom Gulitti has reported that the Maple Leafs will now be forced to compensate the New Jersey Devils for the move. As has become common place in the NHL that compensation will take the form of a Toronto third round draft choice being shipped to New Jersey.
However given the Leafs long term rebuild plan, one that will likely involve them amassing a large number of draft picks, it's not likely to have too much impact on the organization. For the Devils' however it fills the gap left by the third round pick they were forced to give the Penguins when they hired John Hynes.
