Report: Maple Leafs announce a big in-house promotion for one of their big names.
Keystone Press.

While the name of Mark Hunter may not be a household name to the casual observer, make no mistake, he is one of the leading forces behind the current iteration of this organizations management team.

Hunter was originally brought in a given the role of director of player personnel, but there were always rumors behind the scenes that Hunter served effectively as an assistant general manager alongside Kyle Dubas, and under Brendan Shanahan. In fact prior to the hiring of Lou Lamoriello there was even speculation that Hunter could take over the GM role himself.

On Monday the Leafs seemingly confirmed some of those earlier rumors, officially naming Hunter to the assistant general manager position, while clearly stating that his role with the team already encompassed those duties.

“Mark’s new title is essentially a formality as these are duties he’s already been performing,” said Lamoriello as per Sportsnet. “Brendan (Leafs president Brendan Shanahan) and I have been discussing this change of title since last season.

“There are no changes to Mark or Kyle’s duties, or to that of Brandon Pridham, assistant to the general manager.”
