Report: Massive NHL rumor update
KeyStone Press

There have been several trade rumors swirling about as the December 19th holiday roster and trade freeze approaches.

Here's a breakdown of all the discussions around the NHL.

  • Wayne Simmonds, while playing injured, is considered Ron Hextall's most valuable asset for the Philadelphia Flyers and according to Nick Kypreos, his name will get talked about more and more as the trade deadline looms closer, especially if the Flyers don't get back into playoff contention.
  • Buffalo Sabres - every player on the team that isn't named Jack Eichel is available on the trade market. That includes players such as Ryan O'Reilly, Evander Kane, Rasmus Ristolainen, and Marco Scandella, just to name a few.
  • Edmonton Oilers Peter Chiarelli is desperately trying to salvage this season, and has been very active on the trade market. He's searching for a goalie, and has been connected with Michael Hutchinson of the Winnipeg Jets and Petr Mrazek of the Detroit Red WingsRyan Nugent-Hopkins is still on the rumor mill although he's having an excellent season and it doesn't seem like the team wants to part ways with him. Patrick Maroon is also a player very likely to get traded by February 26th.
  • Montreal Canadiens - their up and down season has caused several players' names to be mentioned on the market, including Alex GalchenyukMax Pacioretty, and Carey Price. It seems that Galchenyuk is the most likely to go. Quick little note - Mikhail Sergachev has more points (20) than any Canadien this season. Ouch.
  • Ottawa Senators - they've lost 11 out of their last 12 and have demanded the no-trade lists from every player with a NTC clause in their contract. That included Erik Karlsson. There's a very strong possibility that he's on his way out within the next year.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins - the Penguins have made defenseman Ian Cole available on the market, although with Justin Schultz succumbing to injury, it's less likely that he gets traded anytime soon. The team is also in the market for a reliable 3C, with a rumor circulating that they may try to bring back Matt Cullen from the Minnesota Wild.
  • Detroit Red Wings - the Red Wings are desperately trying to keep their season alive as they sink lower and lower down the standings. Ken Holland has been actively searching for help, but the belief is that the team has the answers internally. Nevertheless, names such as Tomas Tatar, Gustav Nyquist, Henrik Zetterberg, Anthony Mantha, and Mike Green are being mentioned with more and more regularity.

Karlsson, O'Reilly, Pacioretty, Galchenyuk, Price, Kane... take your pick. There are many significant names being discussed and we might be in for the most exciting trade deadline in recent memory.

Who do you want your team to trade for, or keep?
