Report: Matthews back in action for Leafs?

Injured Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews practiced with his team for the third time in a week earlier today, leading to speculation that he may be able to return to the team’s lineup earlier than anticipated.

According to a report from Leafs insider Kristen Shilton of TSN, Matthews was on the ice for his team’s option skate this morning. The biggest difference this morning’s skate from Matthews’ previous outings is that he was NOT wearing a red “no-contact” jersey, indicating that his injured shoulder is ready for body contact. This, of course, is extremely encouraging.

No official word yet from the Leafs on Matthews’ availability for tonight’s game against the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets, but there’s a very real possibility that Matthews returns this week. Stay tuned.
