Another day, another Evander Kane trade rumor. The Buffalo Sabres power forward can never seem to escape it, no matter what he does. This offseason the controversial winger has mostly laid low in the media spotlight as he prepares for a pivotal season for the Sabres and a contract year for himself.

TSN analyst and top NHL insider Darren Dreger believes however that Kane will still find himself in the middle of trade rumors this upcoming season, no matter how well he plays. In fact, if he gets off to a good start, the trade buzz may increase.

“But I think that those general managers with those few clubs would also want to see how he starts the year,” said Dreger on air with Buffalo’s WGR 550 radio station. “Let’s see how his offseason went. It sounds like, in the limited research that I’ve done, that he’s worked pretty hard and he’s motivated going into the contract year.”

“So my sense is that he’s going to be a contributing player pretty early for Buffalo. And if that is the case, and he’s not moved before then, then maybe his stock rises a little bit,” Dreger continued. “But I think that we’re going to talk a lot about Evander Kane in the early part of the season specific to some of the trade interest.”

Of course, this is all speculation and it comes under the assumption that the Sabres won’t be in the mix to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. However, don’t sleep on the Sabres just yet, newly hired GM Jason Botterill has done an admirable job in re-shaping the team’s roster and they will surely be motivated by new head coach Phil Housley. Interesting times in Buffalo, that’s for sure.
