Report: Nathan MacKinnon makes his contract demands known

The Avs may have to be prepared to back up the Brink's truck.

Superstar Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon will now forever have "Stanley Cup champion" on his professional resume, as he helped his squad capture their first championship title in 21 years this past spring when they dethroned the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in a six game series.

Oh, and he happens to be a pending unrestricted free agent at the end of this upcoming season. Needless to say, the Avalanche and their fan base who are still in celebration mode would certainly shudder at the thought of seeing MacKinnon wear another NHL sweater apart from the only one he's ever donned.

Of course, MacKinnon has a relatively simple current cap hit of $6.3 million, which is a severe underpayment for what he provides the Avs on and off the ice. So, how much can he expect to be raking in on his new deal?

According to 104.3 The Fan Avalanche insider Adrian Dater, MacKinnon's camp is seeking to make him the highest ever paid player in National Hockey League history:

"NHL sources tell Colorado Hockey Now that the MacKinnon camp is expecting the star center to become the highest-paid player in the league on his next contract, which is currently under negotiation."

MacKinnon and his camp will certainly have a few comparisons to make during their negotiations with Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic. Take for example the fact that Dallas Stars winger Tyler Seguin will be making a ridiculous $13 million this season, the most of any NHL player. Meanwhile, the New York Rangers are paying Russian sniper Artemi Panarin $12.5 million, while this offseason's highest prized free agent in Johnny Gaudreau inked a seven-year, $68.25 million contract that will see him paid an AAV of $9.75 million with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
