Report: NHL cancels tonight's games
Zuma Press

This just in according to NHL insider David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the NHL has decided to postpone tonight's games and is in the process of informing players and staff members.

Check it out:

This is of course in reaction to the NBA's decision to postpone/cancel games yesterday after the Milwaukee Bucks refused to take the court in a show of protest against the issues of police brutality and racial inequality in the wake of Jacob Blake's shooting in Kenosha, WI. Several other NBA teams followed suit, to the point where the entire league elected to postpone games. Yesterday the NHL held a "moment of reflection" prior to Game 3 of the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning's series, but to be frank it rang hollow and empty. But if indeed the NHL does elect to cancel today's games it would be making a historic move.

We'll wait for official confirmation from the league itself on this matter, but there certainly is a sense that no NHL games will be played this evening. Read below for some insight from some of the league's biggest media insiders:

I have to say, without getting too political that this news has absolutely floored me. To be honest, I'm not sure if I'm for or against these protests, but one thing I'll tell you with certainty is that I honestly felt that I'd never see the NHL take such a progressive stance. It's all fine and well to issue slogans and to stand for something in principle, it's an entirely different matter to put your money where your mouth is though and that's exactly what the NHL has done. Agree with the league or not when it comes to this protest, you can't deny the fact that they're really, really, REALLY sticking their necks out to raise awareness for police brutality and racial injustice. The NHL stands to lose millions of fans as a result of tonight's protests and the league could not have made this decision lightly.

On the other hand, you could argue that the NHL has merely been bullied into cancelling tonight's games by popular opinion. The fact of the matter is that the NHL only acted when it became painfully obvious that they were casting themselves in a negative light by doing nothing. As a result they've reacted, but it's a day late. Now they're open to criticism on both sides. Things could get ugly...
