Report: NHL expected to take proposals for new arena as early as today.

While the project is likely still a number of years away from being completed, this will be welcome news indeed for an Islanders fan base that hasn't received the best of treatment as of late.

According to a report from Sportsnet insider John Shannon, the New York Islanders are expected to officially make a Request for Proposals(RFP) in very short order, in fact Shannon says it could be coming as early as today.

The Islanders have been playing at the Barclay's Center and by all accounts the relationship has been an unmitigated disaster for both sides of the agreement, and now they are looking for a brand new arena at Belmont Park.

While nothing is official as of just yet, it seems rather clear that the Islanders intend to be playing in a new home as soon as humanly possible.
