With Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber expected to activated from the injured reserve any day now, there’s speculation around the NHL that Habs general manager Marc Bergevin is looking to offload a blue liner.

The Canadiens currently have eight blueliners on their active roster, adding Weber will bump them up to nine. Clearly something has to give. The team’s current blue line corps features Jeff Petry, Jordie Benn, David Schlemko, Noah Juulsen, Xavier Ouellet, Victor Mete, Mike Reilly and Karl Alzner. Again… something’s got to give.

“Earlier this year, Marc Bergevin tried to make a move when he had forwards coming back ,” NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported this past Saturday on Hockey Night in Canada’s Saturday Headlines segment. “He didn’t. They couldn’t. They lost Jacob De La Rose on waivers. With Shea Weber getting closer I think they’re trying similar defensively to see if there’s a body they can move out for the logjam.”

According to Boston Bruins insider Jimmy Murphy, the player on the trade block is Benn.

Check it out:

FriedgeHNIC has reported that GoHabsGo could move a d-man soon. I'm hearing that d-man will likely be Jordie Benn unless Marc Bergevin has a bigger deal up his sleeve.

Makes sense when you break down the team’s defence corps. Benn is 31 years old after all, and he has struggled for most of this season. The native of Victoria, BC has just one goal and three points in 20 games this season and has struggled to keep up with the pace that the Habs now play at. Don’t be surprised if he finds himself on a new roster by this time next week.

It's also worth noting that the Bruins DESPERATELY need some help on the blue line, as they've been decimated by injuries this season. It just so happens that this latest rumor comes from a Bruins insider... coincidence? Stay tuned.
