Report: NHL reportedly turned down trade for Tyler Seguin.
Keystone Press.

The Tyler Seguin trade could very well go down as one of the worst in the history of the National Hockey League, if it already hasn't been cemented as one already, but there's another interesting twist to the story of that deal that not many know.

While the Boston Bruins general manager who orchestrated the trade, Peter Chiarelli, will likely have that decision follow him for the rest of his hockey career, there's another general manager who will be haunted by the decision he made when he refused the offer presented to him by Chiarelli for Seguin.

At the time the Buffalo News reported a story that was confirmed by multiple sources, one that had then Buffalo Sabres general manager Darcy Regier turned down an offer to acquire Seguin in exchange for Thomas Vanek.  Needless to say, Regier was terminated shortly after the fact, and Buffalo Sabres fans were left wondering what could have been.

Hindsight is 20/20 and at the time Vanek looked like a player with a very high skill ceiling, but knowing what we know now, both general managers likely carry this one for a long time.
