Report: Oilers and Penguins linked in Puljujarvi trade talks

It’s been a long summer for Edmonton Oilers fans. Sure, newly hired general manager Ken Holland has done a lot of good things since officially coming onboard, but the fact is that Holland and his management team are severely hampered in the moves they can make, thanks to some truly horrendous dealings from previous GM Peter Chiarelli.

Holland managed to offload Milan Lucic, but in return he had to take on James Neal’s onerous contract. Holland was able to free up some additional salary by buying out veteran Andrej Sekera, but there’s still a lot of work to be done before the Oilers pull themselves out of Cap Hell. Oh… and there’s also the Jesse Puljujarvi situation. The former 4th overall pick has informed the team that he will not sign a new deal with the club and will only return to the NHL if it’s with another team. In other words:

Despite Puljujarvi’s request, there’s been little news of a potential trade. Holland runs a notoriously tight ship, but Pittsburgh Penguins insider Dan Kingerski was able to uncover some information regarding Puljujarvi and Holland’s dealings with the Penguins. According to Kingerski, the Penguins and Oilers approached the idea of a Puljujarvi trade earlier this offseason, but Penguins GM Jim Rutherford balked at the asking price.

Check it out:

When news of Puljujarvi’s trade demands broke earlier this summer, an NHL source told PHN the Penguins made contact with Edmonton but did not like the price, believed to be Bryan Rust.

The 27 year old Rust would undoubtedly flouring in Edmonton, particularly if he finds himself on Connor McDavid’s wing. He put up a career high 18 goals last season and 35 points in 72 games with the Penguins. Depending how convinced you are of Puljujarvi’s potential, a straight one-for-one deal could work out well for both franchises. Then again… the Oilers don’t have much success with one for one trades…
