Report: Oilers struggles are worse than ever since the Christmas break
Keystone Press

The Edmonton Oilers are having a really tough season so far, and their record since they came back from the Christmas break doesn't seem to indicate that they're about to turn things around. They played eight games since Christmas, winning only one of them (in shootout against the Anaheim Ducks on January fourth). In those eight games, Edmonton only scored ten goals, while they allowed 30. Their last win in regulation was on December 23rd against the Montreal Canadiens.

Oilers offense only produced 119 goals in 44 games so far this season, good for the 23rd rank in the NHL, and their defense, ranked 26th in the league, is not any better, as they allowed 143 goals. Their goal differential is at minus 24.

The special teams are also struggling a lot this season, as they are ranked 25th on the power play (16%) and dead last on the penalty killing (71.4%).

Edmonton had a really good season last year, when they finished with a record of 47-26-9, ending a ten year playoff drought, only to lose to the Anaheim Ducks in the second round.

The Oilers are currently sixth in the Pacific division with a record of 18-23-3. They lost their last three games, and have only three wins over their last ten games. They are facing the Arizona Coyotes tonight, who are having a terrible season again this year with a record of 10-27-6. Cam Talbot will get the start for the Oilers, and he will be facing Antti Raanta.

Head coach Todd McLellan shared his thougts ahead of tonight's game.
