Could it actually go down?

We’re less than a week into the NHL’s free agent period and the noise surrounding unsigned Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner is reaching a fever pitch.

We’ve already heard from TSN’s Darren Dreger that the Marner camp met with “multiple teams” during the league’s “interview window” prior to July 1st, but now there’s speculation that an RFA offersheet might actually be coming.

First, Dreger’s report:

Now… it’s worth noting that Dreger has come under fire recently for driving the narrative of Marner in Toronto’s market. The assertion is that Dreger is close to the Marner family and actively acting as a secret agent to help drive up Marner’s value. It’s also worth noting that the assertions are entirely speculative and that Dreger has not publicly acknowledged or dismissed any connection to Marner and his representation. Check it out:

Hmmmmmm… just do it already! We already went through this last summer with William Nylander, let’s not do it again with Marner.

For what it’s worth though, Leafs GM Kyle Dubas doesn’t seem too concerned about the threat of an offersheet. “There’s not a real barometer, I don’t think,” Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas said two weeks ago at the 2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver. “It’s a little bit of a new world and we’ll see what happens.”
