Report: Pacioretty “drowning” in Montreal

On last night’s Saturday Headlines feature during CBC’s Hockey Night in canada broadcast, NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported on the situation in Montreal and indicated that a rebuild/retool/reset may be in the works. In particular, Habs management doesn’t feel that its current core group of Max Pacioretty, Carey Price and Shea Weber simply isn’t good enough to build around going forward.

So, what does this mean for the Habs now and in the immediate future. Major changes, according the Kypreos:

“Major changes… what does that mean? You start with Max Pacioretty. I personally think he’s drowning in Montreal. You wanna go back to Toronto and the Phil Kessel situation? Same scenario right now for Max Pacioretty.”

Interesting comparison. For the Leafs, the rebuild started in earnest with the Phil Kessel trade. They followed that up with the Dion Phaneuf trade. Could the Habs make similar moves?

The one sticking point seems to be that fact that GM Marc Bergevin is not interested in acquiring future assets for his proven players. If there are going to be changes in Montreal this season, Bergevin will have to get some contributors back.
