REPORT: Pittsburgh media calls for Ovechkin suspension
Keystone Press

In last night’s 3-2 Washington Capitals victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, things got a little crazy. Pens captain and NHL superstar Sidney Crosby left the game after taking a vicious cross-check to the head from Caps defender Matt Niskanen. It was a brutal hit that earned Niskanen a 5 minute major and a game ejection for attempt to injure.

Niskanen maintains that contact to the head of Crosby was not intentional, as the superstar fell awkwardly into the hit. The NHL appears to side with Niskanen’s side of the story, indicating that there will be no further discipline on the play. One prominent Pittsburgh sports writer, however, sees things another way.

After getting into a contentious postgame discussion with Capitals head coach Barry Trotz, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review columnist Rob Rossi penned a column whereby he suggests the NHL suspend Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin. Seriously? Seriously.

Rossi maintains that Ovechkin purposely high sticked Crosby on his cross crease play in a deliberate attempt to drive Crosby’s head into Niskanen. That’s….that’s some serious suspension of disbelief. For Rossi’s full account of the situation, where he claims that the NHL should, “Rise up and stick it to Alex Ovechkin… just as he did to Sidney Crosby”, read the article below.
