David Poile, general manager of the Nashville Predators, is being hailed as a genius for his construction of the Stanley Cup Finalists. His impeccable drafting acumen and penchant for winning blockbuster trades has vaulted him and his team to the top of the league. Until now, however there was a narrative that he’d somehow fleeced the Montreal Canadiens by acquiring superstar PK Subban for former Preds captain Shea Weber. Not the case, says Poile himself.

Interesting. So after all the speculation and rumor mongering, it was actually Habs GM Marc Bergevin who made the trade call to Poile for the major league swap. Regardless, Poile has to be commended for having the fortitude to trade his team’s captain and one of its biggest, longest standing stars for a player like Subban who carries some baggage and risk.

No matter who you believe, it’s hard to argue that the trade hasn’t worked out for Poile and the Preds. While Montreal was supposed to be the team who benefited in the immediate future as a result of the trade, the Preds are the ones who find themselves just 2 wins away from a Stanley Cup championship. Meanwhile, Weber, Bergevin and the rest of the Habs are booking tee times until October.
