Sad news for impressive rookie.

The Detroit Red Wings have announced a big time cut to their roster and, although it was one that you would have expected prior to the start of training camp,it is one that comes as a big disappointment following a very successful training camp.

According to a report from Mikaël Lalancette of TVA Sports the Detroit Red Wings have cut forward Joseph Veleno from their roster and will be returning him to Drummondville, Quebec where he will continue to develop in the Quebec Junior Major Hockey League as a member of the Voltiguers' organization. As I stated the 18 year old center likely came into training camp expecting himself that he would be sent back down before too long but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that their may have come a moment during training camp where Veleno began to believe, like many fans began to believe, that he could actually make the cut this season.

By all accounts Veleno was spectacular, perhaps even exceptional, in training camp and he also had a strong showing for himself during the National Hockey League preseason, enough so there was speculation he sneak his way onto the roster. Unfortunately it appears that the Red Wings have ptedto have the young forward continue his development in junior, a move that honestly makes sense given the difficult role he would be asked to take on as a center in the NHL. Veleno can still afford to both improve and bulk up as well and this is likely what motivated the decision from general manager Ken Holland.

Surprisingly Velenom the 30th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and Detroit's second 1st round selection in that draft appeared to be impressing more than the 6th overall pick in that very same draft, Filip Zadina. Reports began to surface yesterday that Zadina was not impressing in training camp and although it's very likely that the expectations for Zadina were considerably higher, Veleno was delivering while Zadina was not. That being said though Zadina did pick up a nice goal last night during the preseason and that likely got him some attention from both management and the coaching staff. It's still unclear if Zadina will make it but for Veleno it's over for at least one more year.
